Andy Gillon (born November 19, 1973, in Romford, Essex) is a contemporary oil painting artist known for his vibrant landscapes and seascapes. Growing up in Hornchurch, Essex, Andy's early experiences shaped his artistic vision, evident in some of his works. Art was always his favorite subject in school.
Andy began playing ice hockey at 13, and as his skills grew, played professionally. Andy left school before completing his GCSEs, working various jobs, traveling, and becoming a father to two daughters before settling into a career as an electrician.
Despite always wanting to paint with oils, Andy lacked the time. During the 2020 COVID-19 lockdown, feeling lost, he used art as an outlet to keep his mind occupied and for his mental health. This period reignited his passion for painting, and what began as a hobby has become a labor of love.
Andy has tirelessly honed his skills and methods, resulting in a collection of over 50 unique original oil paintings. Andy's style is characterised by attention to detail, exploring themes of nature, land, sea, water, human emotions, life experiences, and unexpected elements.
Andy has exhibited at the New Artist Fair at the Truman Brewery two years consecutively (2022 and 2023). Two of his pieces were featured in the European Artists of the Year 2024 competition.
Andy has created two paintings reflecting on his personal experiences. One depicts his last memory of a ship sinking that Andy and his school friends were on during a school trip (detailed in his blog "MV Jupiter". The other is a tribute to his first Ice hockey team and his position as Goalie, as well as former ice hockey teammates and friends who are no longer with us (also featured in his blog).
Andy's artwork has been featured in 3 picture books showcasing his work from 2020 to 2024.
Andy continues to explore oil painting, refining his skills and artistic style.
Andy's art reflects the idea that "through darkness, shines the beauty of light and hope." This is inspired by the positive influence art has had on him during challenging times.
Andy Gillon's innovative approach and evocative works continue to push the boundaries of contemporary art. Andy‘s work can be viewed in the Art Gallery here or click below to follow his journey on Instagram as he progresses his work.
